There’s a new water-based coating on the market that is taking roofs and building envelopes by storm. It’s called Kynar Aquatec, a platform of emulsions developed by Philadelphia-based Arkema Inc. What this new coating is doing is raising industry standards for durability and performance of water-based roof coatings.

According to an Arkema business developer, field-applied protective surface coatings formulated with the Kynar Aquatec PVDF waterborne technology have “excellent adhesion” and can be “easily applied” to roofing substrates, including metals, plastics, wood, concrete, and textiles.

Jerry Petersheim, a senior business development engineer for technical polymers with Arkema, said the new coating is similar to the weatherability shown by Kynar 500-based coatings in harsh climates. He said the coatings based on Kynar Aquatec emulsions “last longer than conventional roof coatings,” making them an energy-efficient solution for roof applications.

I like how its low VOC coatings provide water repellency and retain color.

In the coming weeks and months, through BNP Media magazines, Roofing Contractor, Architectural Roofing & Waterproofing, ED+C, Sustainable Facility, and Restoration & Remediation, a 16-page supplement, Sustainable Design with High-Performance Protective Coatings, will take our readers on a journey through the latest developments and technological advancements in green building systems.

We will highlight the opinions and advice of professionals in the field of sustainability — architects, contractors, industry consultants, coatings manufacturers, technology experts, and contributing editors — on water-based PVDF coatings, cool roofing applications and new developments and trends in coating technology.

Yes, this special supplement will prove to be a tremendous source for green friendly design. And beginning in April you can look forward to an educational experience in water-based coatings. Just let me know what you learn?
