Roofs and Roof Structures

Section 1503.0, Construction Documents:

For all roofs and roof coverings required by this code, the construction documents shall illustrate, describe and clearly delineate the type of roofing system, materials, fastening requirements and flashing requirements which are to be installed.

Code interpretation:

This code implies that it is the responsibility of the architect or designer to provide thorough specifications for each project as part of the overall construction documents. The specifications must provide the type of roof system to be applied and the material components that are required in the system (preferably by ASTM standard). In addition to the types of materials required, the specifications should also provide proper application methods of each material, including — but not limited to — proper attachment (fastening) methods and flashing applications. The materials and application procedures must be in accordance with all federal, state, and local codes, as well as proper roofing procedures. The materials specified must meet all fire, wind, and performance requirements provided in the code.

It is a best practice to provide detail drawings for all flashing and accessory components. Simply providing a one-line entry in the construction documents stating the type of roof system required for the project is not only a poor design practice, it is also against the code.

Waterproofing Code: Chapter 18

Dampproofing

Section 1813.4, Waterproofing Required:

Where the ground water investigation required by Section 1813.2 indicates that a hydrostatic pressure condition exists, walls and floors shall be waterproofed in accordance with this section.

Code interpretation:

It is the responsibility of the architect or designer to make certain that the waterproofing component is in compliance with the applicable federal, state or local codes. The primary distinction of the codes is in regards to the water table and hydrostatic pressure. A proper engineering study of the grounds is required to establish this criterion for the design phase.

This code requires waterproofing application when the site ground water table is maintained at an elevation of not less than 6 inches below the bottom of the ground slab. The code requires waterproofing applications where hydrostatic pressure will occur.

ASTM states that dampproofing or waterproofing is required for slabs on ground and foundation retaining walls.
